This is a shot of diners and a self-portrait of sorts. It was taken on Robson Street, the upscale shopping district in downtown Vancouver which was my photographic stomping ground. For several years I lived a few blocks away from this lively corridor, and worked in a department store there too. This photo captures my artistic process as much as it does my typical subject.

I like how graphic this shot is — the door frame of this restaurant creates stripes and separates photographer from subjects. I also like the fuzzy reflection of the photographer in the double-glazed door. This, and the way the reflection reveals the chairs inside the restaurant, suggest another, less tangible level of reality inhabited by the photographer. Makes me think of Plato's allegory of the cave.
