Spring 2018 Glade, B.C. |
last year's pruning pile |
this year I planned to clean up our overgrown trees |
I removed lower branches as suggested by the Fire Smart program |
this removed diseased wood too |
this tree had died :( |
scratch one off the bucket list: felled my first tree (and with a Swede saw!) |
neighbour Jim helped fell a larger tree |
thanks Jim! |
all this pruning made many piles |
my supervisor inspected all work |
I also cleaned up the trees close to the house |
I watered the area around the burn pile |

the grass around the fire needed regular re-watering |
I fed the fire all afternoon |
it didn't take many branches to make the fire too hot to approach |
finally, all the piles of pruning were burnt |
9 hours after lighting the fire |
a rain shower failed to put out the fire |
next morning, 'twas still burning |
white areas are hot spots |
I raked the fire regularly to keep it hot |
still burning |
still burning |
3 days later, the fire was out; only a thin layer of fine white ash remained |
the cats enjoy the clean yard |
